Whilst in the midst of redecorating my living room piece by piece (I have the dining table and chairs, a new sofa on its way and my eye on a coffee table), there's one piece of furniture I'm contemplating investing in - the classic retro sideboard.
I won't have that much wall space once my sofa arrives as it's a fancy chaise longue style but where I currently have an old battered Ikea bookshelf with my TV resting precariously on top, I could definitely fit in a mid-century inspired design. I love the combination of white and oak, although traditional walnut pieces also pull at the interior heart strings a little.
In terms of styling, it's pretty much open to anything you think would work, although I always think a mix of greenery, books and artwork are a great start. One thing I would say though is to try stay clear of being symmetrical - it's nice to make both ends busy but have various objects on each side instead of two candle sticks facing each other, two photo frames turned inwards...you get the picture.
The picture directly below shows how great a stunning piece of artwork can look resting against your sideboard, which is especially good if you're renting and can't hang things on the wall.
Is this something you'd consider for you house? When I finally finish my living room (I have to wait until June for my sofa, boohoo!), I'll be doing a full rundown of everything I've bought - that way you'll be able to see just how I'd style my own sideboard.
Love the one with the big massive colourful piece of art! Just stunning! Looking forward to seeing what you decide on! xxx
ReplyDeleteI really like white and wood so think I'm going to go for something like the top one :) love the art work though on the one you mean! xxx
DeleteI love that one too....just gorgeous :)
DeleteI LOVE sideboards, they're useful as well as pretty and yeah artwork goes super well with them - some great choices. I do like the natural wood look most I think :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a sign of how old we're getting excited about sideboards :) thanks for dropping by lovely!! xx
DeleteI totally agree. A piece of art is a game changer in styling a cabinet or sideboard. I think layering and having accessories at different heights, textures and materials and finishes also add depth and personality. I love the black sideboard with the brass lamp in the dining room. I think it's cool!
