Choosing tiles for your flooring or walls can be one of the hardest decisions to make when making over a room - changing your tiles isn't as easy as giving the wall another lick of paint or pulling the wallpaper off, so this choice needs to be well thought-out and considered. Do you want something on trend? Do you want something more traditional? Plain or printed? Today I’ve narrowed it down to the top five tile trends of 2017. Hopefully, something here will whet your appetite.
Moroccan
The Moroccan themed interior trend has seen a real surge in popularity over the last few years and is ideal if you’re looking to create a timeless look in your home. There’s nothing quite like the design and patterns offered in Moroccan themed tiles, and they really make a difference in any room, adding atmosphere and an exotic feel to your home. They’re also really easy to pair with other interior furnishings which is one of the most important factors for me. So if you’re looking for something to liven up your wall, be it with a complete revamp or a simple splash back then intricate Moroccan tiles are ideal.
Honeycomb
No, I don’t mean that beautiful sugar-filled toffee, although these tiles are as sweet as you like in appearance. Minimal, modern and causing waves on the interior design scene since their arrival. Their fresh and eye-catching look offers something truly unique to your home and instantly modernise the room that they are installed in. Hexagon tiles can also create an even bigger impact when paired with a grouting of a different colour, which can make the shape of the tile appear to ‘pop’. The size of the hexagon completely depends on personal choice with larger tiles better for floors and smaller hexagons creating a beautiful effect on walls.
Chevron
As with chevron flooring, I am also completely besotted with chevron wall tiles which fit in perfectly with another obsession of mine; my love for all things Parisian. The style that these tiles offer is completely unique and yet simplistic at the same time, allowing you to add the element of interest to your wall by using shape as oppose to pattern. These tiles make for a perfect backsplash in any kitchen and due to their neutral features are ideal for pairing alongside pastel colours to create a lighter atmosphere within the room. Not only does this style look great on the wall, it is also ideal for flooring, providing a much more suitable option than solid wood chevron.
Terracotta
These tiles scream summer and much like the Moroccan theme they're reminiscent of being on holiday. Terracotta focuses on warm natural colours and gives off that 90’s vibe which is so in at the moment if you pair these tiles with wicker and woven furniture pieces. This is another trend that has a vibrant, middle-eastern vibe and instantly brightens up a kitchen or conservatory. In fact, this style of tile is double fun because it can be used outside too.
Slate
I absolutely love the contemporary look that is created by slate tiles, as well as the fact that they are natural stone too. Who knew something so rustic in appearance could be so trendy when applied into the home? Not only is slate aesthetically pleasing, it’s a really durable material too, so while it pays to look good it’s also worth knowing that your tiles are going to last. I’ve also heard it being said that slate feels like heaven on your bare feet too - I mean, it’s a win-win situation really isn’t it.
So there you have it, an overview of my top five wall and floor tiles trends for 2017 - let me know which is your favourite.
