Having somewhere to relax both inside and outside of your house is, in my opinion, essential, especially in the summer months. A well thought-out garden design can complete the home, even if you have a small balcony or patio area, there are changes you can make to complete the style of the entire property and create your own sanctuary.
As part of this feature, I’m working in collaboration with paint specialists Sandtex and Sadolin to showcase 8 garden updates to make your property come alive.
Sandtex, for those who are unfamiliar with the name, is the exterior counterpart to Crown paints. Specialising in exterior masonry paint, the brand has been perfecting its formula for over 50 years so it's fair to say they know how to create a good product or two. From exterior gloss to brickwork primer, if there's an outdoor project you're looking to tackle then Sandtex might be worth considering.
The first point to work on when designing your outdoor space is make sure it reflects your personality. The key is to have some fun with it. Add a quirky feel to your garden by hanging hammocks and swing chairs from trees, creating the perfect family space for both relaxation and fun. By using Sandtex exterior satin paint in Gentle Blue, Cloudy Day and Fern Canopy as seen above, this updates an otherwise plain piece of garden furniture.
I absolutely love how this painted table and chairs pop against the black painted statement wall, giving a modern twist to something which can normally look fairly traditional. Why not create a sanctuary so that you can maximise your outdoor living in summer by introducing rattan sofas and tables, a dining area with rattan chairs and a lounge bed for a much-needed summer snooze.
Another great idea to create more seating within your garden is to maximise space by building a bench like the idea below. The rich grain of the wood has been brought out by wood protection brand Sadolin, which not only makes the wood finish durable but waterproof. You can also light your way to an evening oasis by dotting outdoor lanterns throughout the space, which is such an easy way to add style to your space. Throw in some outdoor cushions and a blanket and you’re ready to watch the sunset, drinking Pimms.
Sadolin is another British brand which is renowned throughout both the professional and DIY markets, with a rich heritage spanning over 200 years. What makes Sadolin different to other brands on the market is its innovation. Exposure to sunlight, for example, can make conventional woodstains fade, but Sadolin uses specially selected light-filtering pigments to promote longer lasting colours. Therefore leaving you more time to enjoy the garden than getting the paint brushes out every spring.
Some woodstains, meanwhile, are waterproof but they can also prevent natural moisture in the wood from passing through, leaving the wood to swell up, breaking the bond between the surface and the coating. This brand, however, has been designed to form a Microporous 'jacket', which is both waterproof and allows the wood to breathe naturally. Can you see why so many professionals swear by it?
Your garden interior design should reflect the interior design within your home. For example, if you live in a sleek modern house, maybe reconsider that shabby chic furniture set. It doesn’t need to be huge changes bear in mind to make a difference. Creating smaller focal points through the garden can be a quick and easy weekend DIY project, such as these painted butterflies and picture frames hung on the wall to highlight greenery. The injection of blue is a great contrast between the more natural tones and could be great to use on plant pots to tie the colour throughout the whole garden.
Having an outdoor eating and entertaining space is definitely a luxury, but if you do have the room then update an inexpensive dining set with a lick of paint - again seen here in a palette of Sandtex exterior gloss. I love the use of mismatched chairs, especially when teamed with country white paint and rustic styling. The bunting absolutely finishes this garden off perfectly - if I had the space for something similar, it would take a storm to get me to consider eating inside.
