After more than a decade, the minimalist look is still very
popular. It has definitely gone mainstream, so is here to stay.
Once you have lived in a minimalist home, it is hard to go
back to living somewhere that is overflowing with stuff. Doing so, feels odd,
you no longer feel in control, which makes it hard for you to relax.
The fact that more and more people are deciding to give
their home a minimalist makeover, means that the movement is gaining new fans
every day. If you want to achieve the
same look just follow these simple tips.
Strip away the non-essentials
To achieve the look in your home you have to strip each room
down to the essentials. That means getting rid of any item of furniture that
you are not actually using. Put that
nest of tables you keep in case you get guests in the garage, or give them
away. You do not use them every day, so you really do not need them, which
means that they do not belong in a minimalist home.
Hide your bits and pieces
You also need to go through your cupboards and drawers. You
should get rid of everything you do not use regularly. Doing so gets your mind
in the right place, and frees up the space necessary to allow you to be able to
put everything you are not actually using away.
A place for everything
When you design each room, make sure that you incorporate
enough storage. This is the only way to ensure that there is a place for
everything. There is no point in decorating in the minimalist style if you then
go on to be messy. If you do not get into the habit of putting things away as
soon as you have finished with them you will end up with a look that is
anything but minimalist. Leaving all of your stuff lying around the room is the
fastest way to ruin all of your hard work. So, you need to make it as easy as
possible for everyone to be tidy by incorporating good storage into each room.
Clean lines
Crisp clean lines are important to the overall look. Bear
this in mind when drawing up your design, and selecting your furniture.
Keep the decor light
In theory, you could decorate a minimalist room in dark
colours. However, for some reason, that
approach rarely works. You are far better off opting for lighter colours, and
using darker shades and tones as accents in the room.
Plain floors
It is usually better to keep the floors plain as well, or go
for a wood finish. White laminate flooring looks particularly good in a
minimalist home. It comes in a range of styles and patterns. So, whether you
fancy a tile floor, a ash wood look or a light stone finish you can easily
achieve it using laminate flooring. You just need to make sure that it is
perfectly laid, and that it is good quality, so that it lasts. A floor that is
showing signs of wear is the quickest way to ruin a minimalist room.
