FOUR WAYS TO MAKE INTERIOR DESIGN YOUR OWN

When you’re setting about designing your own home interior, there are about a million factors at play. You may be starting from scratch, picking out wallpaper and furniture; you may simply be looking to add some new flavour to an existing interior; or you may be going for a specific theme, such as I discussed in my previous post about styling your home like a Parisian. Whatever the case, however, it’s always nice if throughout the process you can toss in a few elements that are uniquely yours.

In a way, this may sound silly. After all, if you’re going about your own interior design, you’re already injecting more of your own personality and taste into the home than a lot of homeowners do! But if while you’re at it you introduce a few things that are personally tied to you, you’ll love the end result that much more. These are just a few ways you can do it.

Combine Established Styles

This is a bold but brilliant idea that comes from a lovely home design blog. The post went through several different design styles, such as classical romantic, practical intellectual, and others. But then, it recommended bending and breaking the rules, combining elements from these different styles to make up a sort of hybrid. This is an idea related to the overarching theme of your interior design. Rather than adhering to established norms, you can actually have a great deal of fun and exert some personal expression by blending imagery and coming up with a mix that’s particularly pleasing to you. Image.

Make Wall Art Out Of Photos

Wall art can be both one of the most appealing aspects and one of the most challenging aspects of interior design. It’s wonderful to think of all the artwork you might like to have in your home, but it’s harder to combine personal preferences with the rest of your décor. For instance, your favourite paintings may not necessarily go well with the rest of your interior. One way to get around this problem is to turn your photos into wall art. There are plenty of companies and websites that will do the job, and you can often add fun visual effects to make ordinary photos more artistic. Build Your Own Furniture

This is a little bit more of a project, and to be clear we’re not talking about anything particularly ambitious with fabric, upholstery, and so forth. It’s more the idea of doing a little bit of woodworking, which can be surprisingly simple! With wood, carving materials, nails, screws, and an outline, you can create your own coffee table, desk, or set of shelves with relative ease. To make a more professional job of it, you may want to explore the idea of a power sander that can complete any sanding task without requiring a great deal of effort or strain, and you’ll want to look into finishing options as well. With a sander, you'll be able to effortlessly smooth out rough surfaces with a handheld device (which is more appealing than scrubbing back and forth with a hand sander), and the right finish can really lend that professional quality to the work. But in truth, so long as you have the necessary materials, you can make a nice piece of wooden furniture or two in an afternoon. Image.

Find A Place For Your Hobbies

One of the tricks of personalised home design is to recognise that most anything can be considered a decoration. It just depends what you’re into, and what looks nice! So if you’re an avid reader, for instance, find a place to display a book collection or just a few nice editions of beloved novels. If you’re interested in film, a few classic posters in tasteful locations can be very attractive. If you love nothing more than being at the beach, find room for seashells or mason jars full of sand. It certainly takes some creativity, but you can see how there are numerous ways to infuse personal hobbies or interests into interior design in an effective manner. Image.

With these and other steps, you can go about interior design in a way that’s not just fashionable, but distinctly personal. And in the end you’ll be that much more satisfied with and proud of the results.
