Being one of the most hard-wearing
and robust woods you can get, the use of oak within the home is a great idea –
especially a family home where you can’t be so precious about your belongings. Oak
doesn’t damage very easily and there are some really modern ways you can
incorporate it, especially if “traditional country chic” isn’t your bag.
I love the rustic element of having real oak beams, especially in a new build property, but if you’re like me and are stuck with a boring old flat roof above your head then fear not, there are plenty of other ways you can utilise this light, durable wood in your current space.
A solid oak sideboard, for
example, can give a room a contemporary edge when set against a dark wall with
some cleverly placed pieces of decoration. The key here, as seen above, is to
keep it as minimal as possible – as lovely as that family photo is, move it
somewhere else and keep the top of the sideboard relatively simple.
I absolutely love the use of oak
in the Scandinavian property above. The openness of the kitchen keeps it light
and fresh, with the central island providing storage a ’plenty. And it would give me a pretty good reason to
invest in brand new crockery, especially if it was always on show.
Another way of incorporating wood
into the home in a modern way is to invest in internal doors. A sliding barn
door, for example, works really well with clean lines and white walls. An oak
staircase, meanwhile, doesn’t always have to be traditional – how cool does
this entrance wall look with the blend of
concrete, slate and oak?
Which brings me on to contrasting
materials. I’d never usually consider oak for the bathroom, but when you team
it with Moroccan-inspired tiles like the image below, it shows how versatile
this product really is, and it looks so far removed from its more traditional
use in the home.
When considering wooden
furniture, long-lasting oak should definitely be a key consideration,
especially with its unique grain pattern. Although obviously no-one would turn
down a beautiful oak coffee table, this wood definitely suits heavier, larger
pieces of furniture such as a dining table or bed.
If you’re on the hunt for
oak furniture yourself, then I’d recommend taking a look at British furniture
specialist Quercus Living, which offers beautiful pieces of crafted oak, from
bed frames through to sideboards, consoles and dressing tables. And with a
great sale on at the moment, it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re
looking to invest in new furniture for your home, while still keeping an eye on
your finances. Plus they have completely free delivery which is always a big
bonus in my book.
Are you a fan of using oak in the
home? Are there any styles here that catches your eye? The Scandi-kitchen above
is definitely a décor design I’d love to recreate in my own home one day.
