We’re almost six months into 2017, how on earth did that happen?! With May almost over I thought it was about time I compiled a list of my favourite flooring trends of the year so far - expect rustic, expect Parisian, but most of all - expect gorgeous inspiration.
Chevron
Now you know I’m not one for playing it safe, I like to make a statement, whether that’s with interiors or personally. So it will come as no surprise that one of my favourite trends at the moment is Chevron flooring, which is a form of Parquet. This style of flooring actually originated in 16th century France and was originally installed in luxurious chateaux’ - I can just see it now. From then on it gained popularity through noble houses and grand manors, it was the must have for the wealthy and it soon spread its way across the continent, understandably because it really is stunning. So what is chevron style flooring? Well, this style is where each block of wood meets point to point and creates a zig-zag effect, at a 45-degree angle if you want me to be specific. The beauty of chevron flooring is that it works well with both light and dark wood tones, the lighter wood creating a fresher more fashionable vibe and the darker wood creating a lovely warm texture. Chevron flooring accompanies other trends really well too, for example, if you’re a bit of a minimalist or a lover of the industrial look then chevron flooring can pay a great homage to this. It’s an absolute winner for me.
Matte
Following closely is Matte flooring. The matte look really contributes towards a more organic and natural look so if that is something that sounds up your street then this could be the one for you. I think this style of flooring looks great in the living room area, especially if it is paired with lighter colours such as greys, whether that’s wall colours or furnishings, it can bring a really elegant feel to the room but isn’t overbearing.
Dark Woods
Similar to Matte flooring, I'm a huge fan of dark flooring. I really like it when deep, dark woods are used on the floor and contrasted with bright white walls - for me, it’s a super modern look but classic at the same time. When it comes to the practicalities darker wood floors actually absorb light which means are a lot less likely to fade than light wood floors – as a result, this means that they shouldn’t need to be refinished as often as light floors. A lot of people are quick to point out that darker flooring shows dirt and dust more than light wood, now this may be true but there are a lot of things that you can do to minimise this and keep your floors looking as good as new. Firstly, if you’re like me and you hate bare footprints on floorboards then it’s time to implement the sock rule. Secondly, although it seems obvious, make sure you have the very best cleaning equipment; from a quality vacuum cleaner to a dry dust mop. When it comes to vacuuming your floor you need to be assured that you’re not going to scratch it in the process, make sure you’re using the necessary attachments and speak to manufacturers about choosing the right option for your floor.
So there you have it, my three flooring trends at the moment and a little bit of advice to go with them.
