OSCARS 2017: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Refreshing Twitter and waiting anxiously for the Oscar red carpet pictures to appear has become one of my February highlights, aside from Pancake Day obviously. The 2017 Oscar red carpet didn't disappoint. And by disappoint I mean there were some truly horrific dress choices for the grandest award ceremony of the year - Dakota Johnston I'm looking at you girl. But before we get on the nightmares of the red carpet, let's take a look at the few that made it onto my Best Dressed list.

The Good

Let's face it, Emma Stone was always going to be in my Top Three, regardless of what she was wearing. This girl can do no wrong, as she shows once again in Givenchy Couture. The dress is amazing but as usual Stone kills it with perfectly styled hair, copper lids and lips.

A little more refined than normal, Kirsten Dunst looked effortless in this black strapless Christian Dior Haute Couture gown. I love the dipped hem and bejewelled neckline.

Yes to the dress. Viola Davis killed the red carpet in her very own red creation, custom made by Armani. The neckline is beautiful and the colour works so well with her skin tone. The only thing I would have changed is the silver clutch to a gold to match her bracelet.

I always love to see which Marchesa designs will make it off the runway and this beaded number on Olivia Culpo was breathtaking. I love the black tie detailing around the waist but I just wish she'd have worn a different colour eye shadow instead of that lavender Bourjois shade that we all wore in the early noughties.

I know white column dresses have been done to death on the red carpet, especially caped ones - Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow have both been there - but this Stella McCartney creation looks stunning on Karlie Kloss. Teaming it with one of the biggest accessories of the night, the blue ribbon in support of the American Civil Liberties Union, Kloss looked effortless.

Oozing sex appeal and what looks to be a highly oiled left leg, Taraji P. Henson looked stunning in her midnight blue velvet dress by Alberta Ferretti. With an off the shoulder neckline, this look needed jewels and this necklace certainly brought a dose of glamour.

The Bad

There were a number of dresses that made it into this section, mainly because these didn't warrant the worst red carpet look accolade, but they certainly didn't do anything to excite or spark my interest. Let's get started with the first dress.

I have to admit this was a close contender for the best dressed list but the closer I looked at the detailing on this Ralph & Russo gown the more I disliked it. Mainly because of the foil placements over Hailee Steinfeld's breasts. I know it's obviously designed to cover her nips but I think it only highlighted them. A fail for that reason.

I'm not sure what I dislike about this dress, whether it's the print or the cut, but something doesn't sit right. I don't like to toughness of the belt, or the cheap sheen on the fabric of this Azzedine Alaia dress. Plus, the silhouette makes Scarlett Johansson look like she needs a better fitting bra.

It seems Charlize Theron got Scarlett's memo about oil slicked fabric and a badly cut dress which makes your baps look weird. This Christian Dior dress adds pounds on Theron's slender frame and makes her look broader than she is. Such a let down.

One word to describe Naomie Harris in Calvin Klein. Boring.

Now this may shock a few people, especially as Nicole Kidman has been in so many Best Dressed lists this morning, but I really wasn't feeling this table cloth come Armani Prive dress. It's just too close to Kidman's skin tone and although I love the beading detail of the dress, I would have expected a superstar like this to at least buy some shoes that fit.

There's something just not right about a grown ass woman wearing a headband - especially to the Oscars. Call it a jewelled head piece all you want Vogue, but this is a headband and it let down this Alexander McQueen dress for Salma Hayek in my opinion. And although this was the Oscars, it was nice to see the Golden Globes making an appearance.

The Ugly

Now we get onto my favourite part of the event - the U.G.L.Y dresses that stylists up and down the country are thanking their lucky stars they didn't pick out for their celebrity client to wear.

We'll start at the mild end of the spectrum with this weird Louis Vuitton dress Michelle Williams insisted on wearing. I mean, what is that fabric? The halterneck does nothing for her and the black and nude colour palette looks bland. Next.

Sofia Boutella has obviously been watching a little too much Dancing with the Stars after choosing to wear this feathered and jewelled Chanel number. I suspect the thing that I dislike the most about this whole look is that wonky fringe.

Oh Leslie. Leslie, Leslie, Leslie. I can see that you're incredibly happy with yourself for wearing this Zac Posen dress but there's so much material, you've had to create a little bow around the waist and around the chest. The top half of this dress reminds me of a sun top I wore when I went to Malia back in 2003. It's a no from me.

There's no denying Jessica Biel has an amazing body. I mean, just look at her. But this Kaufman Franco dress looks so restrictive, I'm not sure she's actually breathing in this picture. The makeup and hair are fabulous, but the dress and the heavy necklace are too much and age her more than they should.

Even Ginnfer Goodwin looks pissed off she's had to wear this Zuhair Murad dress.

I'm super annoyed that the only Elie Saab creation on the red carpet is this monstrosity on Janelle Monae. There were so many other Elie Saab dresses she could have worn but this one is completely overpowering with so much unnecessary material, bejewelled neckline and headpiece. It just screams Beyonce video.

Here's a tip Alicia Vikander. Next time, get a dress that fits.

Halle Berry sure does love a dress that looks like it's been ripped and sew back together huh? The Versace number is bad enough but what the hell is that hair do? I'm all for embracing natural curls but at least make sure one side doesn't look it's storing your phone, lipgloss and Oscar invite underneath.

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Worst Dressed of the evening - Dakota Johnson in Gucci. Yes, that's right. Gucci. I mean, what the hell is this? One, girlfriend needs to invest in a steamer and two, choose a dress which doesn't make you look like an extra from Oliver. This looks vintage for all the wrong reasons. That hair looks half-arsed as well. No. No. No.

So there you have it. My rundown of the best dressed, the shouldn't have got dressed and the what the hell were you thinking dressed list. Who was your favourite from the evening? If I had to pick one, it would be Viola Davis in Armani. I'd love to know what you think.
