HOW TO DECORATE WITH DARK PAINT IN YOUR HOME

Dark statement walls are definitely one of the biggest trends of 2016 so far and, even though something deep and rich can look amazing in a home, I can also see why people are so nervous to get the paint brush out.

Experts and magazines have always told us to keep walls pale and light to make a room look more spacious, and with most people not living in a mansion, it's something we've all kind of stuck to. Plus, no one wants to look like a angst-ridden teenager who decides to paint everything black because "no one understands her".

Considering how popular my Dark Wooden Floor Inspiration post was, I decided to put together four very good reasons why you should consider one of this year's paint trends, as well lots of inspiration to try and sway you towards the dark side.

Create a statement room

Dark walls in a bathroom really work as far as I'm concern, especially when teamed with white fittings. If a full wall is too daring, then tile the bottom half in white subway tiles and add a splash of dark navy like you can see above. Again, you could perhaps paint your office or study in a dark tone, to act as a canvas, much like a white space would – even a loft conversion could work with darker hues, especially if you have natural light coming through roof windows like these at Solstro - Roof Windows. Roof windows can make your rooms brighter and throw a new dimension in your room.

Feature walls

Much like an art gallery would use rich tones to highlight the artwork, you could create something similar in your hallway or living room. Use a dark blue or charcoal on one wall and then place framed pictures and pieces of art work to build a focal point in the room - but use the wall next to the window, not opposite to maximise light. You don't want it so dark you can't actually see what's inside the frames.

Backdrop to elegant accessories

How beautiful would metallic finishes look against a dark backdrop? You could achieve just that if you used a deep tone on the walls, and place a large copper dome reading lamp in front with a brown leather armchair to relax in. Interior perfection no?

Childs play

Again, used as a blank canvas, dark walls in a child's room could actually be perfect. One, it hides a multiple of sins and two, it creates the ideal backdrop to the bright and bold colours of children's toys and accessories. Never again will you have to worry about wiping finger marks off your pristine white walls.
